Born and raised in the heart of the Lone Star State, Alana Zimmerman currently studies Business Administration at Texas Tech University. Now a freshman in college, Alana participates in Habitat for Humanity projects, Clean Up The Environment Club as well as being involved in Student Government. In addition to service-learning, Alana’s interests include photography, environmental awareness, and improving youth involvement in community service.

Alana dove into service-learning during her high school career at McNeil High School. Years before high school she devoted much of her time to community service by participating in fundraisers, collecting and giving donations to charities such as UNICEF and volunteering around her town locally including Operation Blue Santa. When she joined the McNeil High School Green Club, the term service-learning became clear and central to her work. In fact, the Green Club received a State Farm Youth Advisory Board Grant for $96,000 to educate people about alternative energies, revamp a power-sucking portable and collaborate with other students, teachers, and schools to inspire “green” thinking. This accomplishment and a passion for leadership pushed Alana to apply for the State Farm Youth Advisory Board and give other innovative youth the same chance to make a difference. Through the board, Alana has created long-lasting connections with inspirational youth across North America and continues to promote education, environmental stewardship, service-learning, and efforts to address the drop-out crisis.
