The Farmer’s Market Project seeks funding for students from Orestimba and Westside High School of the Newman-Crows Landing School District to grow and harvest a fruit and vegetable garden. The students will sell the produce that is grown in a garden at the local farmer’s market. The students will use the knowledge that they gain to develop a presentation, which they will use to educate high school, junior high and elementary students.
The Farmer’s Market Project will specifically address the Environmental Responsibility funding area by focusing on Environmental Education. The project will educate students K-12 on growing, harvesting and consuming local, in-season produce. The concept of creating a sustainable community by only consuming produce, which is grown within 100 miles of a community, has become an important idea that neither students or even parents consider. Students will also learn how growing local produce will provide the benefit of financial sustainability to not only individuals but also the community as a whole.
