The Laker Student ‘Go Green’ team will lead a county wide effort to recycle plastics. Currently, county schools, busiensses and homeowners have no means to recycle plastics. This will displace tons of plastics form our landfills, which is a true need in our county. Students will lead this effort, by drawing up a business plan for the plastic recycling (with local expert help - possibly our local State Farm Agent), purchasing recycling equipment and managing the operation (cleaning and sorting and brokering out). Students will gain real life experiences with busienss design/management and environmental stewardship.

The objective of this grant is to displace tons of plastic from our landfills. Since our previous State Farm Youth Grant has displaced hundreds of thousands of tons of paper and cardboard in just two years, we are confident that we can displace several hundrend tons of plastic in a years time. This proposed State Farm Youth Grant is also sustainable, since it includes a compacter/baler. This is all we need to sustain this recycling project for years to come. If we displace 500 tons of plastic a year, over a 10 year period, that is a total of 5000 tons of plastic displaced and reused. This would be an incredible goal for our ‘Go Green’ team to reach.

Students will gain a great financial education. They will be creating a business plan, managing incoming and outgoing plastic, and potentially hiring outside help (as the project grows in size).
