CHOICES Teen Advisory Board (C-TAB) of Lutheran Family and Children’s Services of Missouri’s (LFCS) Project will train teens in bullying prevention and intervention education with an emphasis on three key areas: girl on girl bullying, cyber bullying, and sexting. The teens will facilitate bullying prevention and intervention sessions for other youth, implement community workshops for teens, parents and community stakeholders, partner with younger youth to create an advocacy message via a public service announcement (PSA) promoting the importance of bullying education via a DVD and local media. In addition, the teens will conduct a research project to determine the impact of bullying a specific elementary school within their community and present the results and findings to the school administration.
The No BS (Bullying Students) Project addresses the Natural and Disaster Preparedness categories by
preparing the students to identify, address and combat bullying at an early age. In addition, it helps student build self-confidence and self-esteem about getting an education and seeing the educational institution as beneficial safe haven.
Project Updates
We are excited to announce that we held our Teen Facilitator Training for the No BS (Bullying Students) Project. The training took place over a day and a half, January 13-14, 2012. As a result of participating in the training, the teen facilitators received:
- Presentation and Facilitation Skills
- Tips for Working With Youth Groups
- Sample Icebreakers and Team Building Activities
- Diverse/Creative Implementation Strategies for Topics
- Leadership Development
Lastly, the teens had an opportunity to participate in mock teachbacks with their peers. Each trainee received and provided evaluations on their peers after each teachback. The evaluations were an effort to improve their presentation/facilitator skills and provide feedback on how their presentation was overall. The areas of evaluation centered around training techniques and teamwork. The overall feedback was very positive.
As a result of completing the training, the teens:
- Became certified Junior Facilitators
- Received a certificate of Completion for the accomplishments
- Received an opportunity to sign up for site based presentations at elementary schools
The girls are now gearing up to implement the community education component of the No BS (Bullying Students) Project starting on Monday, January 23, 2012. Currently, they are providing presentations at 5 CHOICES Program Afterschool sites within the Riverview Gardens and Hazelwood School Districts (Koch Elementary, Meadows Elementary, Townsend Elementary, Brown Elementary, Arrowpoint Elementary). Presentations are being provided to over 75 girls, 4th and 5th graders. Additional sites will be added in February.
Our next CHOICES Teen Advisory Board (C-TAB) meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2012.
